How to Safely Store Cleaning Supplies

If you’re like most people, your stash of cleaning supplies is probably beneath the kitchen sink. But sometimes you probably wonder if that’s the best place to keep them, right? The answer is that it’s handy to keep some of them there, but not the place for all of them. Consider the following guidelines, especially if you have young children, pets or are caring for elderly family members.

Keep Out of Reach

While under the sink may seem logical, many cleaning products are quite toxic. Unless your lower cabinet has a locking mechanism, storing them on a higher shelf out of the reach of children and pets, is a much safer option. Even if the product is in a childproof bottle, it really can’t be trusted. Although designed to resist opening (thwarting even some adults), a determined child may get lucky.  The most dangerous household chemicals include ammonia, bleach, corrosive drain cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and air fresheners.

Avoid Overcrowding

Clever advertising has us all convinced that we must use one specific product for every single cleaning task. This is simply not true. But, if you have accumulated a number of different cleaning supplies avoid overcrowding your storage shelf. Overcrowding can lead to instability. Containers that fall from your shelf when you open the door can be dangerous. Consider including an anti-roll lip to your shelf to eliminate any chance of tumbling cleaning products.

Keep Them Cool and Dry

Often written clearly on the packaging, cleaning supplies should be stored in a cool, dry space. Some cleaning chemicals can have hazardous reactions when they experience extreme temperature fluctuations or high levels of humidity. Your storage area should be well-ventilated and away from HVAC intake vents. This helps prevent any fumes from spreading to other areas of your home.

Clean Is as Clean Does

Take a quick look at your cleaning containers after use. If some of the contents have spilled onto the outside of the bottle, give it a good wipe. This will keep your supply shelf clean and dry. Spilled cleaners can cause damage to both the shelf and the floor. In addition, a wet and damp environment will encourage the growth of mold and mildew. This extends to used microfiber cloths, which should be washed after every use.
